Technical Note 150: Storage and transportation of CROHMIQ® Static Protective Type D FIBC
CROHMIQ Static Protective Type D FIBC do not require special storage or transportation. Using the general guidelines published by FIBCA (FIBC Handling Guidelines • FIBCA), or by EFIBCA, will ensure safe storage and transportation for CROHMIQ bulk bags, whether unfilled or filled.
Storage
- Ideally FIBC should be stored indoors.
- Store FIBC in clean, dry conditions and protect from direct sunlight.
- If stored outdoors (not recommended), protect from direct sunlight and inclement weather (rain, snow, etc.).
Stacking filled FIBC
- Only stack FIBC if:
- FIBC are designed to be stacked (consult FIBC supplier if unsure);
- you are sure of their stability;
- PYRAMID or SUPPORTED stacking is used.
- Never approach or repair a damaged bag without first removing all bags stacked on top of it.
Each bag above the first layer must sit on at least four lower bags. Each layer is subsequently tiered inwards forming a pyramid structure.
Bags are stacked against two or three retaining walls of sufficient strength.
Transportation of filled FIBC
- Ensure pallets, if used, are in good condition, and free from nails, splinters and other protrusions that can puncture or otherwise damage FIBC.
- Use pallets of an appropriate size so that FIBC do not overhang the sides and become unstable.
- Secure FIBC during transportation (e.g. with strapping, dunnage bags, etc.).
- Avoid subjecting FIBC to sudden lifts or sudden stops.
Static protective properties
Some static protective FIBC use antistatic additives or treatments applied to the surface (topical finishes). Most of these additives and treatments have limited effective life, and many are water soluble, with the result that they are quickly degraded by exposure to water. FIBC with such additives or treatments may require special storage conditions.
CROHMIQ technology does not rely on antistatic additives or treatments. The static protective properties of CROHMIQ fabrics are derived from special yarns (CROHMIQ Yarns™) that are woven into the fabric. The electrostatic properties of CROHMIQ Yarns are permanent, and are not affected by normal storage and use.
Exposure to inclement weather, i.e. water, is not recommended for any FIBC, but there are scenarios where bags can become wet. Puddles or large patches of water on a bag are, in effect, isolated conductors and should be removed before use in a hazardous environment. Shaking or wiping off excess water so that the surface is visibly free of water and dry to touch is sufficient for safe use.
Testing of CROHMIQ FIBC that have been subjected to 12 wet wash refurbishing cycles prove that static protective properties are not degraded by exposure to water, and CROHMIQ bulk bags continue to meet all safety standards for Type D FIBC.
Shelf-life
CROHMIQ Yarns and CROHMIQ fabrics are not affected by age-related degradation. Provided the storage protocols outlined above are followed, the shelf-life of CROHMIQ Static Protective Type D FIBC is indefinite.
